Career in cosmetic dermatology isn’t that bad choice!

Cosmetic dermatology specialists in the field of skin care and have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree at an accredited university and the medical residency that confirm their competence as a doctor. They are then board certified dermatologists and often go on to hold top positions in their specialty. Any cosmetic dermatology specialist begins with the basic education, clinical experience and understanding to perform both aesthetic and medical dermatology, however, most choose to specialize in either cosmetic or medical cosmetic dermatology. For the cosmetic dermatology patient who chooses to use medical cosmetic dermatology services and does not practice cosmetic or medical cosmetic dermatology, their cosmetic dermatology knowledge and skills will atrophy due to the fact that they rarely if ever use their skills in either field. This is where a good cosmetic dermatology schooling program can help.

Scholarship programs & more

The cosmetic dermatology schooling program helps the medical student to acquire knowledge and skills in all areas of dermatologic laser surgery, surgical facelifts and much more. It also gives the medical student the understanding to conduct his or her own cosmetic laser surgery or undergo cosmetic laser surgery under the supervision of a board certified cosmetic surgeon. After medical school the medical student is then eligible to take the Certified Surgery Doctor (CSD) exam that is nationally recognized as a measure of cosmetic surgery expertise. Once the medical student passes this exam, he or she is then able to become certified as a cosmetic dermatologist.

Cosmetic dermatologists complete the four-year residency program at a facility that provides comprehensive cosmetic laser surgery and medical care. This allows the medical student to gain experience in general surgery and dermatologic laser surgery while also gaining the hands on experience needed to compete effectively in their specific field. The residency program also allows the skin doctor resident to participate in the many clinical trials that are done in this field each year. These clinical trials help the medical student to learn about the latest technology and use it in their practice.

Residency program complete, what now?

After completing the residency program in cosmetic dermatology the medical student is then prepared to sit for the State of New York Board of Medical Examination and Citizenship exam which are a much tougher exam than the national exam. At this point in time there are three different licensing boards that allow skin doctor doctors to take the exam and pass in order to become a Registered Dermatologist (RDF). A few states also require that the RDF have completed a two year residency in non-dermatology fields before they can apply for the exam to become an RN. After passing this board certification exam and becoming an RN the cosmetic dermatology doctor is ready to take the field of medicine exam for the cosmetic surgery field.

Once these areas are mastered, a candidate can expect to pass the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) exam which will certify them for skin procedures. There is currently not a national requirement for skin doctor but many cosmetic procedures including laser skin care can be performed locally in the state that the doctor is practicing in.
